Johannesburg

Here are some things i’ve learned from JoBurg…

1. Everyone is interested in the United States. The front page of the newspaper had a cartoon about Bill Cosby, the hotels and restaurants have art and photos with american movie icons all over, and they are obsessed with Elvis.

2. “Melrose Arch” is a place for fancy pants people. While we booked here because the room was costing us $30 USD per night, there are high end BMW & Audis, Range Rovers, Ferraris, Porsche and Rolls Royce all over the place. Even the taxis are Mercedes. It is a gated community with high fashion and fabulous restaurants. The good news is they’re all pretty inexpensive. Breakfast the other day was two cappuccinos, a muffin and a cinnamon bun for $6 USD. But not like Dunks quality, like boutique coffee shop quality, hot-out-the-oven quality, warm and delicious quality.

3. Jet lag does exist. I felt great yesterday. Dan and I even stayed up until 1am goofing around.  I realized when I had been laying in bed with my eyes wide open for two and a half hours (3:30am) that this was, in fact, jet lag. My body still felt like it was 9:30 like at home. Which is strange, because I’m ususally snoring on the sofa at 9:30pm ayway… oh well. I thought I hadn’t slept a wink all night so when Dan woke me up he nearly got a punch in the face. Turns out it was noon, and time to get up. Hopefully tonight will be better.
